Makower UK

Makower UK was founded in 1862 by Moritz Makower. Born in Poland and educated in Berlin, her served his apprenticeship in silk trade in Berlin & Lyons. In London in 1862 he saw an advertisement for an agent for silk manufacturers in Lyons. Knowing the Lyonnais worked on a Sunday, he took the train and presented himself early on the Sunday morning. Only 21 years old, he persuaded them to give the agency and a stock silk on credit.

For 100 years, the business based in the City of London. With the threat of war it moved to Henley on Themes in 1938. After the war, it kpet the warehouse in Henley, where it stayed for over 70 more years. Today, the business remains based in England, delighting customers worldwide with quirky British designs produced on fine quality cotton.
