Makower UK

Makower UK was founded in 1862 by Moritz Makower. Born in Poland and educated in Berlin, he served his apprenticeship in the silk trade in Berlin & Lyons. In London, in 1862, he saw an advertisement for an agent for silk manufacturers in Lyons. Knowing the Lyonnais worked on a Sunday, he took the train and presented himself early on the Sunday morning. Only 21 years old, he persuaded them to give the agency a stock of silk on credit.

For 100 years, the business was based in the City of London. With the threat of war, it moved to Henley-on-Thames in 1938. After the war, it kept the warehouse in Henley, where it stayed for over 70 more years.

Today, the business remains based in England, delighting customers worldwide with quirky British designs made from fine quality cotton.
